 As I began to think through what my [work] would look like, I realized that I sometimes struggled to articulate my story in the most compelling way.  My son, a freshman in college, was debating to transfer to another institution by the end of the first semester. As a parent I dismissed the suggestion as I felt he could not leave a top education institution. But as the second semester was advancing, my son persisted on the transfer idea and then the pandemic hit, and all the colleges closed. I felt that the idea to decide under those circumstances was senseless. Since the transfer idea was not going away, we decided to hire Vanessa’s services not to provide us with the “correct” answer but to help my son to make a decision that would make sense to him. First step was for Vanessa to get to know my son, his concerns, his values, and priorities. At the same time, she had numerous conversations with me and my husband to get to know us too and see how our values and priorities aligned or not with my son’s. Then she put into effect a plan for the next sessions. She was excellent building a trustful relationship with my son which allowed him to open up and acknowledge who he is as a person, identify short- and long-term goals, and how he sees him dealing with unexpected or frustrating situations. Vanessa conducted different exercises with him, and we kept having conversations through the process, so we all were educated on the progress of the decision-making process. Ultimately my son made a thorough, intelligible, conclusive decision based on facts, knowledge, and awareness of possible consequences. The most important value to Vanessa’s services was not for my son to make a decision but the meaningful process he went through that has equipped him now with “tools” that he will be able to use for future decisions in different aspects of his live.
